2024 | Strategic Planning & Policy Department: Bernald Lee
Hear from our intern, Bernald Lee.
It has been my privilege to complete a 3 month-long internship with the Strategic Planning & Policy Department at IPOS. This experience has been instrumental in deepening my understanding of public policy, intellectual property (IP), and IPOS, while providing invaluable practical exposure to life and work in the public sector.
During my internship, I had the opportunity to work on several projects that enhanced both my technical and soft skills. A significant highlight was my research into IP financing in China, South Korea, and the United States. I examined and analysed the IP financing schemes in these markets, identifying key characteristics and practices that could apply to Singapore. This experience provided me with firsthand insight into IP financing and its challenges.
This experience honed my analytical capabilities, creative problem-solving abilities, and research methodologies as I had to find solutions to problems that emerged in the research process. Beyond research skills, I also gained valuable experience in data collection and data storytelling, having to present findings in a way that effectively communicates insights to stakeholders. The opportunity to work on this also allowed me to understand how research directly influences policy and strategic planning.
I also assisted with interviews to better understand SMEs’ use of IP. Through the interviews, I gained valuable experience interacting and communicating with stakeholders, which helped strengthen my interpersonal skills and capabilities at engaging stakeholders. Working with the interviewees taught me the importance of public feedback when implementing or revising public policies. These interactions helped me develop a deeper appreciation for the public policy development process.
I am particularly grateful to my mentors, Wei Hao and Xing Le, who consistently provided guidance and support throughout the internship. Their willingness to share their expertise has been instrumental in shaping my understanding of not just IP but public service too. The team's commitment to allowing me to explore projects aligned with my interests while challenging me to grow professionally made this experience especially meaningful.
This internship has not only enhanced my professional capabilities but has also provided clarity about where I want to work in the future. The exposure to public policymaking has reinforced my interest in the public sector and equipped me with valuable insights for my future career development.
