Hear from our intern, James Tan.
Bridging Theory and Practice: My Journey Through IPOS's Internal Audit Internship
My internship at the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) has been an eye-opening experience, offering unique insights into the inner workings of this crucial government agency. As part of the Internal Audit department (IAD), I gained invaluable insights into the world of intellectual property and the crucial role of auditing in a government statutory board.
My primary responsibilities included testing of internal controls, conducting data analysis, and assisting with the creation of the PowerBI dashboard for status updates.
One of the highlights of my internship was assisting with Procure to Pay Audit. At first, the task seemed daunting. Terms like "quotation", "tender", and "GeBIZ" swirled in my head, and the complexity of procurement processes felt overwhelming. But with patience from my team and their willingness to guide me, I gradually began to unravel the intricacies of procurement process in public sector.
I've been particularly impressed by IPOS's commitment to continuous improvement. Our department plays a crucial role in this, constantly seeking ways to enhance internal processes and ensure compliance with the highest standards of governance.
I used to think that auditing was about finding faults, but I've since learned that this perception was incorrect. Auditing is much more about improving internal control processes by partnering with respective departments. It involves understanding the challenges faced by different units and collaboratively finding ways to enhance overall efficiency and effectiveness.
As I wrap up my time at IPOS, I'm leaving with more than just knowledge about regulations. I'm taking with me problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and a deeper appreciation for the work that goes on behind the scenes to keep a government agency running smoothly.

IAD out for team bonding activity
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to my colleagues in the Internal Audit Department. Their guidance, support, and willingness to share knowledge have been invaluable. They welcomed me into the team, provided me with meaningful projects, and offered constructive feedback that helped me grow both professionally and personally.
The skills and insights I've gained during my time here will undoubtedly serve me well in my future career. I'm truly grateful for this opportunity and for the kindness each team member has shown me.
